EMERGENCY MEDICINE CLERKSHIP PROGRAM

Program Goals

Through our EM clerkship, students will be able to:

  • Gain an understanding of how the hospital works as a whole, starting from the Emergency Department (ED).

  • Gain experience in performing a focused history and physical exam.

  • Gain experience presenting their findings to attending physicians and advanced practice providers*

  • Broaden their understanding of differential diagnosis and treatment plans

  • Take advantage of the opportunity to perform and/or observe a wide range of procedures

Experience

The clinical experience entails clinical shifts in our ED areas: Trauma, Fast Track (low-acuity illnesses), Major Medicine, and Pediatrics.

In addition to bedside teaching, didactics are held every Wednesday from 9 am - 2 pm for students. These mandatory sessions include case discussions, EM Ultrasound lectures, case reviews, and dedicated student sessions.

Scheduling

Clerkship rotations are scheduled accordingly:

All students MUST complete all pre-rotation and/or credentialing requirements in time in order to be cleared to start a rotation and be added to the ED schedule. Credentialing is not handled by the EM Clerkship Program at all.

Meet The Team

Hear why our former students chose Brookdale .....

"I chose Brookdale for the training and the people. When I was doing my clerkships, this place just felt like home. No other place I rotated did people stop to take the time to learn you name and say hello. This place truly felt like a family."
- Rebecca Galer, D.O.
Chief Resident
"From the moment I rotated at Brookdale, I knew I wanted to train here. The sense of family and community, the diverse pathology, and high acuity all contributed to my decision to want to call this place home for the next 3 years.."
- Khalid Elmi, M.D.
PGY - 1 Resident
“While rotating at Brookdale, I was amazed by the patient volume, diversity of disease and population, and more importantly, by how capable the staff and residents were. Despite all of the chaos, they managed to harbor a nurturing educational environment for students.
It was very easy to get along with everyone here, and they were all happy to teach at any moment. After a couple of shifts, I knew this place would make me the best version of the emergency doctor I wanted to be.”
- Majd Abouhemeid, M.D.
PGY - 1 Resident
"When I rotated at Brookdale as a student I realized that it was a challenging place to work clinically, but it was also a rewarding place to work because I could tell that the residents supported each other and cared about the patients.  Being a resident now, I believe that learning to navigate the challenges of our ED makes us stronger physicians and helps us learn to stay focused under pressure. I'm lucky to have some amazing co-residents and attendings and would 100% chose Brookdale again."
- Michelle Wrynn, D.O.
PGY - 2 Resident
